The Rockefeller Center located in the heart of midtown Manhattan is listed amongst the most remarkable landmarks and eminent attractions of New York City. The center comprises of buildings developed in the midst of the Great Depression. Originally known as Radio City the complex consisted of 14 buildings, the 70 story RCA building being the tallest.
History
The area where the Rockefeller Center is located was a red-light district owned by Columbia University which was leased out to John D. Rockefeller Jr. who originally planned a Metropolitan Opera at this site. The stock market crash of 1929 compelled Rockefeller Jr. to abandon the project and change his plan to construct a corporate complex to house the new radio and television corporations.

Top of the Rock - The Observation Deck
One of the top attractions at the Rockefeller Center is the observation deck atop the GE Building which provides panoramic views of Central Park and the Empire State Building. The observation deck consists of three levels, one on the 67th floor, the second on the 69th floor with glass windshields and the third being completely open on the 70th floor.
Radio City Music Hall
This place is famous for its skating rink and is linked to Fifth Avenue via a pedestrian street known as Channel Gardens from where one can have a fabulous view of the sculpture of Prometheus and the GE building. The Radio City Music Hall with a seating capacity of around 6000 is also located here. |
