| At The Empire State Building, located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street in New York City is a 102 story landmark. The building was built in just 18 months during the Great Depression in 1931 and stood as the world’s tallest building for more than forty years, until the construction of World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. The Empire State Building once again became the tallest building in New York City after the destruction of World Trade Center in 2001. One of the most important landmarks of New York City, the Empire State Building has been named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Top attractions in the building are the floodlights, added in 1964 which illuminates the top of the building at night. The illuminated lights in various colors are chosen to celebrate various holidays and other events like St. Patrick's Day, Christmas, Independence Day or Bastille Day. For a long time after Sept. 11, 2001, it was continuously lit red, white, and blue. The 86th floor observatory of the Empire State Building is the world’s most popular outdoor observatories, from where visitors get an impressive 360-degree panoramic view of New York City. The observatory deck is visited by 3.5 million people every year and has played host to several cinematic, television and literary classics. The building itself has been portrayed in numerous films with the most famous popular culture representation of the building in the 1933 film King Kong. |
